CLARIFIED EXPLANATION OF DIRECTING AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
  • A film director is the chief of a film/TV production, controlling artistic/dramatic aspects as well as visualizing the script, making hiring decisions (in various departments), guiding the crew/actors in the fulfillment of their vision. Directors also mediate creative differences and are tasked with staying within budgetary limits.

  • A cinematographer (aka director of photography, DP or DOP) is chief of camera & lighting crews and responsible for artistic/technical decisions including cameras, film stock (or digital format), lenses, filters and other elements in accordance with the director's intentions.

Director/cinematographer relationships vary with some directors granting creative independence (i.e.: Clint Eastwood) while other directors specify exacting camera placement and lens selection (i.e. David Fincher, Stanley Kubrick). Regardless, an established relationship with a cinematographer creates a distinctive visual character for a film director and their body of work.
