Biography

Marco Brambilla is an Italian-born, New York-based artist and filmmaker whose video collages, immersive installations, and large-scale public works interrogate cinema, spectacle, and the American cultural imagination. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Raised in Canada from the age of seven, Brambilla studied film at Ryerson University and began his career directing commercials before making his feature debut with Demolition Man (1993), a $59-million science-fiction film starring Sylvester Stallone that grossed $159 million worldwide. Disillusioned with the studio system, he turned exclusively to art-based video and installation work in the late 1990s, debuting the landmark exhibition Halflife at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in 2003.

Brambilla is best known for the Megaplex series (2008-present), monumental video murals composed of hundreds of looping Hollywood film samples, structured on Dante's Divine Comedy. The series has been presented at the Venice Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, the Perez Art Museum Miami, the Fondation Beyeler, and the Sphere in Las Vegas. He collaborated with Marina Abramovic on 7 Deaths of Maria Callas (2020) and with Cate Blanchett on The Four Temperaments (2020).

His recent projects - King Size (2023) for the Sphere in Las Vegas, Approximations of Utopia (2024) across 95 Times Square billboards, and After Utopia (2025) at the Wolfsonian-FIU - foreground artificial intelligence as both creative tool and subject. He is represented by bitforms gallery, New York.
