Biography

After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley, Steven North earned a Masters Certificate in Drama at Bristol University (UK), then attended UCLA film school for a year and a half. He left UCLA when Haskell Wexler offered him a job as associate producer on Medium Cool. He produced his first feature, Homer, in 1969, and has had a rich career in feature film and television production ever since. In 1973 he produced Shanks, written by Ranald Graham, and scored by Steven's father,Alex North, earning Alex an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score. His best known features include the critically acclaimed The Last Butterfly (1990) directed by Karel Kachyna, and Vukovar (1994), winner of 21 international awards. His many quality television productions, for Disney, Hallmark, ABC, CBS, NBC and cable networks, have earned praise and high ratings, and a prime time Emmy Award for Huckelberry Finn. In 2021, Steven is in partnership developing Challenging Heaven a ten hour mini-series that recounts the birth of the People's Republic of China, written by John Goldsmith based on the book, Mao A Life by Philip Short. He hopes to produce a theatrical production of Misia and Coco based on the life of Misia Sert and Coco Chanel written by Claude Harz.
