Biography

Harry Schein born in Vienna but sent to Sweden during his teens. In 1950 he was baptized by Erik Bergman, Ingmar Bergman's father, and became a Swedish citizen the same year. The culturally interested Schein wrote film reviews for Bonnier's Literary Magazine from 1948-56. He was the driving force and creator of the Swedish Film Institute in 1963, where he started out as the chairman of the board of directors and continued as Managing Director until 1970. In 1972 he returned as Managing Director and stayed until 1978. Harry Schein passed away in his home in Djursholm outside Stockholm in 2006.
