Biography

Marilyn Schreffler was an American actress from Wichita, Kansas, Her live-action roles were limited to guest stars and extras, but she was a prominent voice actress in animation from the late 1970s to her death in the late 1980s. Her memorable roles included the timid teen detective Brenda Chance in "Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels" (1977-1980) and "Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics" (1977-1979), the mean-spirited hillbilly Daisy Mayhem in "Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics" (1977-1979), both the female lead Olive Oyl and the Sea Hag (Popeye's archenemy) in "The All New Popeye Hour" (1978-1983) and "Popeye and Son" (1987), the cowgirl Wendy in "Buford and the Galloping Ghost" (1978), Firestar's obsessive enemy Bonnie in a 1982 episode of "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends", and the teenage werewolf girl Winnie Werewolf in "Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School" (1988).

Little is known about Schreffler's early life. She was born during the final months of World War II in the summer of 1945. She attended Topeka West High School and graduated in 1963. She briefly attended Washburn University, before starting to work as a comedian. She was part of several Chicago-based and Cleveland-based comedy groups during the 1960s. She moved to Los Angeles by the end of the decade.

Schreffler started her career as a voice actress with the animation studio Hanna-Barbera, and continued working for the studio on-and-off until her death. She also worked at times with the studio's corporate sibling Ruby-Spears. Both animation studios were subsidiaries of the media conglomerate Taft Broadcasting from 1981 to 1987, and shared part of their personnel. In 1987, Schreffler had voice parts in the live-action thriller films "Fatal Attraction" and "Jaws: The Revenge".

Schreffler fell ill in summer of 1987, experiencing abdominal pain and weight loss. She received a diagnosis of advanced liver cancer, and with a terminal prognosis. She opted to start palliative care. She recorded her final voice-over projects from home during the last months of her life. She died in January 1988 at the age of 42. Schreffler was buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery of Topeka, Kansas.
