Biography

Viktor Sergeev (Sergeyev) was born in 1938, in the Soviet Union. He studied journalism at Belorussian University in Minsk, then was assistant director at Belarus Film Studio, then worked as director at Leningrad Television. In 1988, Sergeev made his directorial debut with 'Klad' (1988 TV movie), a criminal drama set during the Soviet perestroika. He continued as director of drama films, such as Palach (1990) (aka.. The Executor), Geniy (1991) (aka.. The Genious), Shizofreniya (1997) and other. From 1997 - 2002 Sergeev was Managing Director of the Lenfilm Studio in St. Petersburg, Russia. He also produced several films by director Aleksandr Sokurov, such as a period drama Moloch (1999), that won the best screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Golden Palm (1999). Sergeev was a member of the European Film Academy. He died of natural causes on November 19, 2006, and was laid to rest in Komarovo cemetery in St. Petersburg, Russia.
