He is the first son of director Shohei Imamura. He graduated from Ryuku University. In 1984 he joined Shinchosha, but left in 1991 to pursue a creative career. His directing debut was in 1990. He was also a screenwriter on movies of such directors as Shōhei Imamura and Takashi Miike.
