Biography

Courtney Wu was born into a working class family in Hong Kong. He spent his teenage years sneaking into cinema after school, mostly watching European movies, usually twice in the same day -- the 2:30 and 5:30 shows.

During the first show, he watched the movie just as anybody else would, but for the second viewing he concentrated on the camera movement and angles. He became very interested in the role of director although he also paid some attentions to the actors. After doing this for about one and a half year, he was caught by the cinema usher and found the cinema door shut later on.

Two years later, he went to US to continue his high school study. When it was time to decide on a major in college, Courtney followed his intuition after watching the late Bill Bixby "Incredible Hulk" on TV and chose radiologic technology. He became, after learning radiology, not an incredible hunk, but a licensed radiologic technologist instead. In his spare time he ventured into the world of acting through occasional classes in People's Light Theatre in Malvern and Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. In 1991, he portrayed police officer Welch in Neil Simon's play "Rumors", at a dinner theatre near Philadelphia with the Phoenix Company.

Upon his return to Hong Kong, Courtney entered the movie industry through occasional roles in local movies. Today, Courtney Wu has appeared over 90 films and 30 TV programs in Hong Kong. Since 2007 he has also appeared in "Police Magazine", a weekly show on RTHK, the government TV station.

In 2016, joining with executive producers and directors, Courtney Wu had finally the privilege to step on the stage as the lead actor to the film "Ten Years" to receive the Best Picture Award from the 35th Annual Hong Kong Film Award ceremony. In 2019, his short film titled "Who's Next" generated 610K views on Youtube within the first two months.

Courtney had been an avid fan for Dick Wolf's "Law and Order SVU" since its inception 25 years ago. He hopes someday he can appear in that television series as a major villain.
