Bob Hersh was born Robert L. Hersh in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA to Emil and Mary A. Hersh. He married Sandra Hiken; in 1964; with the couple having three children, Leonard, Laura, and Susan. Hersh went to the University School of Milwaukee and Marquette University Law School.
