Lacey Uhlemeyer

Lacey Uhlemeyer is a writer-director whose work combines sharp observation, grounded emotional arcs, and a signature blend of humor and humanity. With roots in journalism and documentary, she brings real-world texture to every story she tells.

Born and raised in Missouri, Uhlemeyer began her career as an international journalist, reporting from over 22 countries before turning to filmmaking. That background informs her filmmaking lens: empathetic, curious, and unafraid to confront the truth.

Her debut narrative feature, Maintenance Required (Amazon MGM, October 8), is a modern-day take on You've Got Mail. Inspired by a short documentary she made about an all-female auto shop, the film follows Charlie (Madelaine Petsch) as she fights to preserve her beloved garage while unknowingly confiding online in her real-life business rival (Jacob Scipio). The cast also includes Madison Bailey, Katy O'Brian, Inanna Sarkis, Matteo Lane, and Jim Gaffigan.

Her feature documentary The Dancer premiered in summer 2025 and has since played at Oscar-qualifying, dance, and LGBTQ festivals worldwide. The film chronicles the extraordinary journey of Ahmad Joudeh, a gay Syrian dancer condemned by his father and threatened by ISIS, who ultimately finds freedom and international recognition through his art.

Her next narrative project, Salt in the Soil, is inspired by the true experiences of her friend Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, a Black wildlife biologist who faced threats of violence while researching grizzlies in rural Montana. The film blends thriller, mystery, and character study to explore ecological conflict, racial tension, and rural identity in America.

Alongside her film work, Uhlemeyer has collaborated with major brands to tell humanity-focused stories for NIKE, Amazon, HP, Bristol Myers Squibb, and the National Parks Service. In 2020, she was recognized as one of 35 filmmakers in SHOOT Magazine's prestigious New Directors Showcase.
