Biography

Yasser Al Azma studied law at the Faculty of Law, Damascus University before transitioning to the arts in the 1960s. His legal background later shaped his analytical approach to writing and performance. He is a fierce critic of authoritarianism. In December 2024, after the fall of the Assad regime, he addressed the Syrian people celebrating "the defeat of the kingdom of injustice" and the "fall of the tyrant". Throughout his career, his satire critiqued social hypocrisy, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and political absurdities in Syrian society. Yasser comes from the prominent Al-Azmeh family, a distinguished Damascene lineage with Kurdish roots tracing back to a Turkmen military leader who settled in Damascus in 1630. The family includes national hero Yusuf al-Azma (Minister of War who fell at the Battle of Maysalun in 1920) and Bashir al-Azma, who served as Prime Minister of Syria in the 1960s. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Joy Awards 2025 in Riyadh for decades of artistic excellence.
