• Because director Robert Wise thought that it was unnatural that the winner of a Western brawl usually finished the fight vigorously, he made it a point that both fighters would be exhausted and worn out at the end of this one. The scene took three days to shoot and no stuntmen or doubles were used to keep it as realistic as possible. Many contemporary reviewers noted the brawl was the highlight of the picture.

• Walter Brennan, an Old West aficionado and historian, saw Robert Mitchum walk onto the set in costume and said, "That is the god-damnedest realest cowboy I've ever seen!"

• For the night scenes director Robert Wise and cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca chose to use infrared film, despite problems it could cause with tones of clothes and makeup.
