• Censors for the American Occupation Forces ordered changes to the script by Akira Kurosawa and Senkichi Taniguchi, especially the bleak ending in which Kyoji goes mad. They were concerned that people with syphilis would be too horrified to seek treatment.
• This film was the first film Kurosawa directed outside of Toho, as it was a co-production between Daiei Studios and the newly formed Art Film Association, of which Kurosawa was a founding member.
• This was Akira Kurosawa's only collaboration with famed film composer Akira Ifukube. The two clashed intensely over creative differences during filming.

Splendid actors
Despite being a "lesser" Kurosawa film, this is an exceptional film
well-acted melodrama that isn't one of Kurosawa's best
