The title of the film, "At five o'clock in the afternoon", is a famous line from the poem "Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías" by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.

"La cornada" ('The Goring'), the play by Alfonso Sastre on which the film's script is based, premiered at the Teatro Lara in Madrid on January 14, 1960.
