The Atlantis crew were in fact picked up by the German supply ship Python but after that too was sunk, they made their way back to Germany courtesy of Italian and German submarines using a small flotilla of rubber boats. On their return, they received a heroes' welcome from the head of the German Navy.

Charles Laughton was paid $100,000 by Dino De Laurentiis, almost twice the salary he received for "Spartacus ", released the same year.

According to Mylène Demongeot in her memoirs, Charles Laughton arrived from London on the set to perform his role, and the director told him how to play the character. But, instead of obeying to what the director said, Laughton told him where to put the camera.
