• Director Harald Reinl wanted a relatively unknown actor for the role of Peter Clifton in order to confuse the audience more about the character's position and eventually casted stage actor Hellmut Lange. Reinl wanted the audience to remain unsure about the ambiguous character of Clifton till the ending of the film. Lange later went on to become one of Germany's most popular Television-Actors in the late 60ies.
