A real psychiatrist and occasional writer Miroslav Plzák, a well-known media figure of the time, played the episodic role of a psychiatrist in the film. When asked why he was featured in the film, he later humorously replied that he had treated the director Petr Schulhoff, who gave him the role in lieu of a fee for his treatment.

The film is loosely inspired by the real-life case of serial killer Václav Mrázek, who was sentenced to death in 1957 for a total of 150 offenses, including seven murders.
