Numbed by career demands and a recent divorce, Dr. Alexandra Kendall (Marsha Mason) hides behind a hard shell of professional detachment, until she treats Buffy Koenig (Kathleen Beller), a dying 17-year-old cancer patient who reawakens Kendall to life's possibilities. Soon the courageous girl's condition takes a downturn, and the physician must carefully, even agonizingly, weigh the consequences of keeping a promise she made to Buffy.

Did you know
• Lorenzo Lamas: in a pre-fame role as Josh, Buffy's football player friend.
• Writer Loring Mandel conceived the story for use on the daytime serial Love of Life (1951), in which he was employed as head writer in 1972-73. When the show's executive producer Darryl Hickman rejected the story, Mandel quit the show and developed it into a feature length screenplay instead.
• This was the only film that Producer Jerome Hellman ever directed.
