Because it did not include a copyright notice when it was released in the United States, this film legally became part of the public domain. A flood of inferior copies were produced, usually either taken from the original U.S. Cinema Group Home Video VHS or a lower quality source. (Films released after March of 1989 automatically receive copyright protection even without a specific notice.)

Teenage Dream (1986) was first screened at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. According to director Paul Lynch, the film had a very strong showing at the festival due to its release in the wake of similar and highly successful films such as Flashdance (1983) and Footloose (1984). As a result, leading production company Golden Harvest turned down bids from numerous distributors in favor of releasing the film itself. According to Lynch, Golden Harvest lacked resources as a distributor, so the film's theatrical release was very limited.

Teenage Dream (1986) (also known as "Dream to Believe," "Teenage Dream," and "Love at the Edge") is a Canadian drama film directed by Paul Lynch and starring Olivia d'Abo, Rita Tushingham, and Keanu Reeves.
