Tim and Daphne Reid had previously co-starred on Frank's Place (1987). The groundbreaking single-camera comedy was a hit with critics, but it struggled in the ratings, and frequent rescheduling didn't help matters. A letter-writing campaign didn't reverse CBS's decision to cancel the show, but the overwhelming response eventually prompted the network to greenlight this series.

Daphne Reid was the first Black woman to headline in an hour-long show since Get Christie Love! (1974) was canceled after one season.

In the unaired pilot, Tasha Scott portrayed Chance's daughter from a previous marriage, but ultimately she was demoted to playing his niece. Despite the fact that she only appeared in two episodes, Scott retained a starring credit.
