• Joanna Kerns plays the mother of Roby Marshall in this movie. Joanna Kerns also played the mother of Tracey Gold's character on the TV series "Growing Pains". The real life Roby Marshall married Tracey Gold.
• In the book and the film, the man acquitted for the actual murder of Maria Marshall was called "Ricky Dunlap." His real name was Larry Thompson, and in March 2014, while serving prison time for unrelated crimes, Thompson admitted to investigators that he was in fact the killer. He could not be tried again for the Maria Marshall murder due to "double jeopardy" laws, but will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison regardless, as he is now in his early 70s and is not eligible for parole until the year 2071. With Thompson's confession, New Jersey investigators now consider the Maria Marshall case completely closed.
• Rob Marshall's death sentence was later reduced to life in prison after a Supreme Court ruling raised the standards for death penalty cases. A parole hearing for Marshall was scheduled to take place in March of 2015. His sons Roby and Christopher both stated they would be present at the hearing to argue that their father should not be paroled. However, Rob Marshall died in prison from natural causes on February 21, 2015.
