Did you know

• Richard Gere and Julia Roberts had obvious chemistry upon their first meeting; however, Gere was not planning on taking the role. He was on the phone ready to turn down the part when Roberts slid him a Post-it note with the words "please say yes" written on it. He accepted the role right then.

• Richard Gere is actually playing the piano, and also composed the piece of music he plays.

• By all accounts, the production process was a merry chaos because director Garry Marshall approached the screenplay only very loosely, and encouraged the actors to improvise multiple takes of almost every scene. For example, Richard Gere improvised the scene when Edward snaps the necklace case down on Vivian's fingers, and because the filmmakers liked Julia Roberts's natural reaction so much, they decided to leave it in. When rumors of the messy production reached Walt Disney Studios, studio executive Jeffrey Katzenberg was sent over to supervise the project. He approved after seeing the snail scene footage, and concluded that it was indeed very funny.
