• Over 1,000 girls were tested for the role of Fiona, which required the actress to be "Thin, underweight, pale complexion, but perky and not afraid of water."
• Although in the original novel the story takes place in Scotland, the filmmakers decided to have the film take place in Ireland for practical reasons.
• When grandfather was telling the story he mentioned the schoolmaster put a cingulum around his neck, they were more commonly called bataí scóir or 'tally sticks' , used to discourage pupils from speaking the language. These were sometimes called by other names. In Kerry it was known as a cingulum or singulum.
