Over 1,000 girls were tested for the role of Fiona, which required the actress to be "Thin, underweight, pale complexion, but perky and not afraid of water."

Although in the original novel the story takes place in Scotland, the filmmakers decided to have the film take place in Ireland for practical reasons.

When grandfather was telling the story he mentioned the schoolmaster put a cingulum around his neck, they were more commonly called bataí scóir or 'tally sticks' , used to discourage pupils from speaking the language. These were sometimes called by other names. In Kerry it was known as a cingulum or singulum.
