• Tatsuya Nakadai portrays Nakayo, the wandering ronin who fights Zatoichi at the end of the film. Nakadai also played the protagonist in the film 'Kagemusha' (1980). The role was originally set to be played by Shintaro Katsu (Zatoichi) but he quit due to creative differences with director Akira Kurosawa.

• This is the twenty-first of 26 films to star Shintaro Katsu as Zatoichi.

• Zatoichi's katana is a shikomizue. This is a sword which is concealed within a wooden cane, thus the cane itself is both handle and scabbard.
