The Château de Saint-Fargeau, where the mini-series was shot, used to belong to Jean d'Ormesson's mother's family. There, he spent many years during his childhood and the castle inspired his novel 'Au plaisir de Dieu', and eventually the mini-series.

According to Jean d'Ormesson, Burt Lancaster was first approached to play the duc de Plessis-Vaudreuil, then Laurence Olivier, then Jean Gabin before the part went to much lesser known Jacques Dumesnil whose performance proved none the less to be a huge contribution to the success of the series.
