• Selling more than 9 million copies, this went on to become the third-best-selling Super Nintendo title in history.
• First game to introduce state of the art wire-frame 3D technology, producing high quality 3D animation. This came about when Nintendo released its licensed game Aladdin (1993) around the same time as Sega's Aladdin (1993). Although both games did well critically and commercially, the high praise for the Sega game's innovative graphics and gameplay overshadowed the success of the Nintendo game, which also sold fewer copies. Nintendo then sought to develop a game that could compete with Sega's game visually, and the result exceeded everyone's expectations, as well as the sales for Sega's Aladdin.
• Cranky Kong is meant to be the original Donkey Kong from the old arcade games, which is reflected in his monologues, such as "We never had any of this fancy 3D stuff! Oh, no, we had to survive on what we had! And what little we did have, we were happy with!" and "You're nearly as good as I used to be!"
