Did you know
• This miniseries was filmed and broadcast in colour. However, only a black and white copy survives because the BBC destroyed the original master tapes in a misguided attempt to create more space in the archives (often referred to as the now much regretted "wiping policy", which led to the loss of many episodes of Dad's Army (1968) and Doctor Who (1963), including other programs by the BBC). The black and white version is available on DVD.
• Ian McShane sprained his wrist early in the filming, but struggled on to complete the mini-series.
• This series was the inspiration for Kate Bush's song "Wuthering Heights". She was 18 when she saw this series on television, and she wrote the song within a few hours in the night of March 5, 1977. It became Bush's most successful single.
