The film tells the story of Yang Naifan, who abandons her husband and children and elopes with her first love, Li Zuyi, only to be ostracized by society. After Li Zuyi dies of illness and poverty, Yang Naifan raises their daughter alone, but because her past affects her daughter's future, she ultimately chooses to commit suicide by drowning.
