Did you know
• The plot of this film is based largely on the publication of the 1993 memoir A Rock and a Hard Place: One Boy's Triumphant Story by Anthony Godby Johnson. Maupin, who wrote an endorsement for the book, never met Johnson, and it largely believed that Johnson never existed.
• At 5 minutes and 58 seconds into the film, Armistead Maupin's real-life husband Christopher Turner appears, playing the part of Jess's (Bobby Cannavale) friend whom Gabriel (Robin Williams) facetiously refers to as "Lucifer." Jess corrects him and says, "Lucien. He's just a friend."
• Stars Rory Culkin and Robin Williams share the same birthday (July 21st) but were born in thirty eight years apart from each other. Williams was born in 1951 and Culkin was born in 1989.
