Unlike most anime, the mouths of the characters in the film were drawn to match the English dialogue.

Doc's voice is provided by Jim Byrnes, who played Joe Dawson on the TV series Highlander (1992). Doc is shown to be missing a leg from the knee down, a reference to Byrnes's real-life disability - Byrnes lost both his legs from the knee down when he was struck by a car in the 1970s, a disability which was written into the TV series, which established that Dawson lost his legs after stepping on a landmine in Vietnam. Byrnes also voices the bartender who serves MacLeod, another reference to the Dawson character, who owned a blues bar on the TV series.

The American version of the film is shorter than the Japanese version. Producer Galen Walker said in an interview that "about seven or eight" scenes were cut "just for timing, and just for pace of story", and admitted that director Yoshiaki Kawajiri was unhappy with the cuts. An opening exposition text, which is traditional for Highlander films, was also added to the American version.
