The film is an adaptation of Ned Vizzini's 2006 novel of the same name. While fictional, Vizzini used his own experiences from a brief hospitalization for depression in November 2004 as his inspiration for the book. On December 19th, 2013, Vizzini committed suicide at the age of 32 by jumping off the roof of the building where his parents lived in Brooklyn.

In the scene where Keir Gilchrist's character Craig describes other classmates of his, he can be seen holding a copy of the book "Be More Chill". Ned Vizzini, the author of that 2004 novel, also wrote the 2006 book of the same name upon which this movie is based.

During the rooftop scene, Emma Roberts's character Noelle says that she likes the band Pixies. Earlier, when she was mad at him and he was outside her door, an instrumental piano version of their song "Where Is My Mind" can be heard playing.
