Director Maroesja Perizonius has won three awards with Child of the Commune, the first being the Prize for the Best Debute at the Netherlands Film Festival 2005.

Guru Bhagwan proclaimed that the traditional family unit was the root of social dysfunction, one of the reasons he encouraged sterilization for women. Children, some from the age of four, often lived apart from their parents and were raised in communes.
