The reputation of Fiona Chisolm (Hannah Sussman) closely resembles that of rich New York hotel owner and "Queen of Mean", Leona Helmsley.

The name of the hotel is an homage to the The Wizard of Oz (1939). The hotel's name is "Dorothea" and the owner is from Kansas, the same as Dorothy Gale in the book. The terrier "Otto" is an anagram of "Toto" and is also a terrier.

Most experts have the opinion the link between "Ring Around The Rosie" and "The Black Death", which occurred from 1346 to 1353, are tenuous at best. Various iterations of the song first appeared around the 1840s and in print some years later. The link between the rhyme and plague would be less questionable if the the original version of the rhyme and its many derivations had appeared much sooner than some 480 years later.
