• Most Swedish critics consider this the best movie or television adaptation of the Wallander canon, in particular because of Sir Kenneth Branagh's performance. The most prominent newspaper in southern Sweden (where the series was set and filmed) acknowledged this with an article whose title translates as "Wåll-and-ör- The Real Wallander" (the first part pokes fun at the way Wallander's name is pronounced in English).
• Season three, episode one, "An Event in Autumn", was never made as a Swedish Wallander, and BBC was the first to make a movie adaptation of Henning Mankell's short story with the same name.
• Henning Mankell had originally ended the Wallander book series in 1999 ("Before the Frost", published in 2002, was actually meant to launch a spin-off series with Linda Wallander as the protagonist, while Kurt appears only as a supporting character). He went back on his decision after the success of the first season, and wrote "The Troubled Man" as a result.
