This film is based on the article "True Crimes - A postmodern murder mystery", published by David Grann in The New Yorker on February 11, 2008. The article reports the strange true crime story of Krystian Bala, a writer arrested for the murder of a Polish businessman. A detective called Jacek from the Wroclaw police department in Poland investigated the crime without any success, but three years later reopened the case after he read a crime novel, because the book featured descriptions of a murder that were too similar to be a coincidence.

The film shot for 32 days in Kraków, Poland.

Before Jim Carrey was attached to the movie, there were a couple other actors considered before he was. The first choice for the role of Tadek was Christoph Waltz. Waltz was attached to the role, but he eventually left the project for unknown reasons. Saban Films then offered the role to Morgan Freeman, but Freeman turned down the role as he didn't express interest in the role whatsoever. Eventually, Jim Carrey was offered the role, to which he accepted and was cast in the movie.
