Thirty-year-old doctor Szymon has everything he needs in his life. He has a girlfriend, a car, a mortgaged apartment, and a vague sense of impending disaster if nothing changes. The night after his birthday party, Szymon stands in front of the mirror and tries to piece together the past day. The balance isn't favorable. The most poignant event is the "Rysiek affair" - a tenant to whom his father rented his grandfather's apartment, and who, despite his lease having expired, refuses to move out. Szymon's father, who was a "world champion" to Szymon, has now, inexplicably, become a man devoid of character. Szymon sees in his father's attitude a foreshadowing of his own personal disaster. He is terrified that his life will soon be the same. "Birthday" is a story that carries serious consequences, but it is a story written in a comedic vein, tailored to the needs and abilities of a hero of our times.
