• In 2013, the FEC fined Barack Obama's 2008 campaign $375,000 for failure to report campaign donations. According to a Politico article dated Jan. 4, 2013, "The major sticking point for the FEC appeared to be a series of missing 48-hour notices for nearly 1,300 contributions totaling more than $1.8 million -- an issue that lawyers familiar with the commission's work say the FEC takes seriously. The notices must be filed on contributions of $1,000 or more that are received within the 20-day window of Election Day." In the same article, former FEC commissioner Michael Toner said "the infractions were relatively minor, given the scope of the campaign."

• Dinesh D'Souza repeatedly claimes that then-President Obama sent him to prison for making this film. D'Souza was arrested for breaking campaign finance laws. He made $20,000 in illegal campaign contributions to the New York Senate campaign of Wendy Long. On May 20, 2014, D'Souza pleaded guilty to one felony count of making illegal contributions in the names of others, and was sentenced to five years probation, eight months in a halfway house, and a $30,000 fine. President Trump pardoned D'Souza in 2018.

• Dinesh D'Souza's lawyer Benjamin Brafman says that all charges of campaign contributions were lies from the Obama administration because D'Souza exposed the truth of Obama's background in this film.
