• The exterior shots were shot on 65mm film while the interiors were captured on digital cameras.

• The pipes in the closing scene were acquired from the Caledonian Society Of Uganda, and were made at the turn of the century by "Glens" of Edinburgh. They were picked up after a recent visit to Uganda to play at a Burns Supper. James A. Adamson, the piper, appeared as an extra in the BBC adaptation of Sunset Song (1971), in one of the Arbuthnott Church scenes.

• The scene where Chris undresses and looks at herself nude in the mirror was also included in the 1971 television series adaptation for BBC Scotland at the insistence of actress Vivien Heilbron, who played Christine. It wasn't originally written into the script because screenwriter Bill Craig didn't think she'd want to do it. But Heilbron convinced him and director Moira Armstrong to include it because it was so integral to her character's story. It became the first nude scene broadcast on BBC Scotland, though it wasn't as revealing as the 2015 movie. Heilbron was only shown from behind while Agyness Deyn is shown fully nude from the front.
