There are several major changes the show makes compared to the source novel. The family's post trial trip is to Jamaica, not Mexico. On the trip Jacob's parents find a red stain on his shirt after Hope goes missing. Hope later washes up on shore dead, with her windpipe crushed. Jacob dies in the car crash with Laurie left in critical condition.

Chris Evans and Jaeden Martell play father and son in this project. They previously appeared together in Playing It Cool (2014), playing the same character at different ages, and in Knives Out (2019) playing cousins.

Leading man Chris Evans and original author William Landay are both from Boston (MA), Landay having served as an Assistant District Attorney in Massachusetts before becoming a writer. Evans' Andy Barber plays an assistant DA in Newton, the city in which Landay's novel takes place.
