• One of the main changes to the plot of the novel is to give larger roles to the female characters, Marie Cardona and Djemila, the sister of Moussa, the Arab, which isn't even named in the novel. Though she liked the movie, Catherine Camus, Albert's daughter, did not care for these changes, especially not the fact that the movie ends with Djemila grieving at her brother's tomb.
• To get the rights, François Ozon came to see Catherine Camus, Albert's daughter and custodian of his work, and pitched his version of the story to her. He was very glad to succeed in convincing her, as he knew that some famous directors had tried before him and failed.
• Third adaptation of Albert Camus' famous novel, after The Stranger (1967) (from Italy) and Fate (2001) (from Türkiye).
