The show was created because they owed 800,000 pounds sterling to Mark Forstater, the producer of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), over legal fees and back royalties for their stage show "Spamalot!" The show was supposed to be for only one night, on July 1, 2014, but high demand for tickets turned the show into a 10-night event. Enough money was made that not only were they able to pay Forstater, but each surviving major Python actor was also able to pocket 2,200,000 pounds sterling.

Special Guests in the Blackmail sketch included Stephen Fry, Lee Mack, Bill Bailey, Noel Fielding, Matt Lucas, Warwick Davis, Simon Pegg, David Walliams, Eddie Izzard (who also appears as a celebrity "Bruce" in the last show), and Mike Myers. Astronomy Professors Brian Cox and Stephen Hawking also appeared, explaining the mistakes in the "Galaxy Song" lyrics.

The first show sold out in 45 seconds.
