• The famous lean scene was done by harnesses, but Michael liked it so much he wanted to take this on tour so instead of a harness he had special made shoes that had a hole cut into them so when he stood on stage he would walk to an area of the stage where the shoe would have a locking mechanism to perform the famous lean however with this he had to practice developing upper body strength to pull this off.

• Originally, "Smooth Criminal" was to be the title track of Jackson's new album. However, at the request of producer Quincy Jones, the album received it's name from another song - "Bad".

• During the shooting of the video, Jackson's friends Gregory Peck and Robert De Niro paid a visit to the set.
