• The series is based on the case of Dutch drug dealer Janus van W. Like his counterpart Ferry Bouman in the series, he ran an illegal XTC network from a Belgian camping site and was arrested in 2009 following an undercover operation. Where the series differs from reality is that the undercover agents pretending to be a couple were both Belgian (in the series, the wife is Dutch), and it took them about 1.5 years before they had their first success, after they were able to learn van W.'s phone number and tap his phone; although van W. indeed got shot during an assault once, it was by a second cousin he had fallen out with, not a disgruntled business partner. Van W. was finally arrested during the agents' staged engagement party (not wedding). He was sentenced to 10 years for drug smuggling, but released in 2015 on the condition that he not return to Belgium. He has since gone into hiding, and was displeased to hear that a series modeled on his life was in production. His legal team claimed that the makers had based the series on van W.'s criminal file, but since they couldn't sufficiently prove this, the case never came to court.

• After the success of the first season, Janus van W., the real-life inspiration for drug dealer Ferry Bouman who had long been in hiding, turned himself in with the authorities. In a weird example of life-imitating-art, van W. registered himself as 'Ferry Bouman'.
