• Although she continued to act sporadically until Liebestraum (1991), Kim Novak virtually abandoned the profession after filming this movie in 1964. She was only 31 at the time, meaning she has now been retired for two-thirds of her life.
• In a 1966 interview with the New York Times, Terence Young revealed that he had been obliged to make fifty-nine cuts for the US release "in the interests of American morality".
• In 1985, model Janice Martin was announced as the title heroine in an updated version by Ken Russell and Penthouse's Bob Guccione. After several false starts, including a last minute cancellation in Rome, the project, which would have included Glenda Jackson, Oliver Reed, Rod Steiger, and Trevor Howard, all ended up very acrimoniously in court. Russell won.
