• At the beginning of the film, after the main group of friends have donned their uniforms, there is a shot that tracks across them marching and singing confidently with the rest of the soldiers. The camera shows them in the order that they die in the film- Ludwig, Kropp, Franz (off-screen), and finally Paul.
• Erich Maria Remarque's book was inspired by his own experiences as a German soldier in World War I. Remarque fought in the trenches and the novel is notable for its realistic depiction of the horrors of battle, and the trouble soldiers face during and even after the fighting.
• The title, "All Quiet on the Western Front," refers to the ending of the novel the movie is based on, where the reader is told that the only report on that day was "there was nothing new to report on the Western Front."
